Annie leibovitz was on NBC nightly news tonight. When asked what camera she recommends, she answered that she always tells her friends to use an iPhone. Guess I'll sell the Canons.

You do realize that Annie is giving this advice to a non-enthusiast right? I think she has the right idea. People who are not especially interested in photography for the sake of photography are well advised to get an iPhone or a nice P&S.

Annie was not giving this advice to the kind of people who hang out at POTN.

Indeed, you beat me I was going to say essentially the same thing. For a non-enthusiast, camera phones and P&S's are quite adequate.

She probably has no idea what P&S would be good anyways (being a working pro and using DSLRs all day she likely is not a gear junky), but knows that the iPhone has OK quality so that's not bad advice.

No, I didn't - LOL. Apparently the snippet was a continuation of a previous interview where she talked about her new book. Didn't know she had put one out. I'm wondering if profits from it are going toward all her financial problems.

^^^ It was during that 1 minute interview with Brian williams. She recommended the iphone and then took it out of her pocket and took a picture of brian right then and there. Then, the camera focused in on the phone's screen and it was the picture of brian and her OOF finger covering the top 1/5 of the screen. Funny, lol. Here it is at second 40. (external link)

LOL. Of all the mistakes I've ever made, a finger in front of the lens was not one of them. But then to be fair, I suppose it's easier to do it using an iphone than with a 5D2 and a 400mm lens. ;) :)

Those that take her comment on this so literally should realize the context in which she was giving it. I can't believe how so many will jump on her very words.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

who's jumping on her? other than the OP's single sentence: "Guess I'll sell the Canons.", everybody else has just been making general observations, or at the most joking around...

I can't believe "guess I'll sell the canons" was taken literally, but yea... it was joking around too.

No, it was not tongue in cheek. If you saw the interview, it was sincere advice from her. Brian Williams, the interviewer, even commented on how surprising the response was. But as has been pointed out, she was talking about her friends who are everyday folks, not dedicated photogs. And who knows, perhaps she has a relationship ($$$) with Apple, too. ;)

Wonder what she got paid by Apple to say that people should use iPhones. It must have been a big pile of cash. :(

There ARE other manufacturers which produces better quality cameraphones such as Nokia with their N8 cameraphone. But people seem to forget that and instead recommend the already overhyped iPhone.

Agree with Magnus3D. iPhone's are over rated (IMO and no offence to iPhone users). Wouldnt mind having one but the fact i always have to go through iTunes seems such a hassle to me.

But Annie Leibovitz is one awesome photographer tho.

I wouldn't say the iphone is overrated... It certainly changed my daily life when I bought my first one 2 years ago. Is it possible that she just owns an iphone, and therefore recommended it? Why does everybody always think the worst of people?
Magnus, the same could be said about canon, eh? thirdkid, I go on itunes maybe a couple times a month, not much of a hassle if you ask me.
