david ziser swears by the Sigma 12-24. I seen his work with it and its excellent. I cant find a copy that is extremely soft in the corners. Looks like he shoots with it way above F/5.6 most of the time. 12mm on Full Frame is Wide. I googled david ziser and sigma 12-34 on images link and was blown away at what he does with the lens. Im inclined to think its a lot more PP but it sre is wide

Tim, have you used Nikons 14-24 ?

Reason i ask is because im almost ready to modify a 10-22 for my 1.3 format camera.

No, haven't used it. I got the 16-35 over the 14-24 because I wanted VR, and one stop isn't critical to me given how good the D700 is at high ISO.

I used to own the 14-24 when I used to shoot with Nikon. Nice lens. Don't really miss it. The 16-35L more than suffices. Never felt I needed VR at those focal lengths.

I like VR, sometimes I end up shooting at 1/20th and I find it helpful, even if just for reassurance.

I don't have anything wider than 24 now. I get by and I've taken group photos of 50+ people. Would I like something wider? Of course! But only if someone else buys it for me. :)

For me, it's not about large group shots (which I try to avoid shooting wider than a 35 if space permits). Getting wide is much more about those sweepingly wide big sky kind of portraits.

That and it helps when shooting preparations in a too-tight hotel room.

I regularly do 150+ people photos, maybe that's why I need 16mm.

^ same here. 24 still isnt wide enough to fit everyone in, even after telling them to all bunch in closer.

Indian weddings can have up to 400-500 people lol!!!

Well, you *CAN* shoot with no lens wider than 35mm BUUUUUUUUUUTTTTTT...

...that means there will be times where you'll have to FORCE the wedding to accommodate you... which is plain retarded, stupid, and irresponsible as a professional WEDDING SHOOTER.

ORRRRRRR.... you can be properly equipped for all scenarios and be able to fully accommodate the needs of your clients. Basically do the job you were hired to do.

I still use the 10-22 on FF every wedding. It works great for me. No complaints. If you zoom below 11mm then there is potential for mirror interference, but that's about it. I just made the habit of storing it at 22mm so that reduces the chances of an accident. It's been a few years now and I haven't had a single accident yet.

Extreme corner sharpness isn't there, but really, I couldn't care less. I'm shooting people, not bare brick walls and tests charts. It's just nice to have ONE UWA lens for 1.6, 1.3, and FF.

Why, do you have a 10-22 or something?

Im looking to do this. Im concerned about vignetting and not sure where its gonna be on the 5D and the 1.3 format. 16-35 is not very wide on the 1.3. Thats basically 20mm FOV and 21mm for the 17-35 The modification look pretty simple so depending on how bad it vignenetts, im might consider doing it. I have not put a tokina on but a friend has one and 15mm is pretty heavy on the vignetting..,,looks like it kind of defeats the purpose. Have not tried it on the 1.3 at all. If i could get 16mm fov on the 1.3 I would be very happy. So i would be interested in hearing and seeing what you do with a 10-22 and the 1.3 format.

Yeah, the 10-22 works from about 12mm on 1.3 crop,so it does give that real UWA perspective. I don't have any samples at the moment as I am on my phone, but I will try to dig some up later.

WOW,, Thats almost 15mm FOV. If you have a couple of examples you could post or PM, I would be grateful. I would like to see where the Vignette starts and where i would need to crop. Sounds like a winner for me because i dont think canon is going to come out with a 14-24 anytime soon:o. Shoot on a 1D 1.3 format,,you can shoot at 1600 all day so the variable F/stops on the 10-22 is a mute point, plus that 10-22 gets greats results.....only thing i miss about our previous crops. 10-22 is a killer lens.
