The passport thing is new to me. Not sure what his plans where but good riddance.

When I was living in offshore, a current US passport was worth over $4k, this is prior to them putting chips in them. Swiss passports were selling for about $8k. There used to be good money in passports. I don't know what they do with them, but I assumed it was not good.

Step 1: Put this in all of your craigslist ads:

"Cash only. Price is (firm/negotiable but lowballers will be ignored/etc). If this ad is up, 'the item' is still available. When responding, put *Random something that you'll immediately recognize* in the subject or I will NOT respond to your inquiry. Sorry, but this helps get rid of scammers." (Note - if you feel comfortable, ask for a cell phone number for communication. I usually dont bother till we are going to meet).

Step 2: Only open emails from people who take the time to put *something that you'll immediately recognize* in the subject and make contacts that are actually interested in buying your wares.

Step 3: ? ? ?

Step 4: Profit.

LOL I get these all the time nowadays. Gmail is pretty good at identifying if the email came from the scammer by putting it in a lighter font. So I don't even have to bother reading. :D

Here's the crap I get from selling a rv waste tank ...... I've about had it with CL...too much spam

I discovered your ad and wanted to ask you something essential. I am married and caught my partner cheating on me so I want to get back! My best friend said cl would be the best place to find someone who I can hook up with for one time only so thought the hell, I would email someone I thought sounded sexxy in the ad and came across yours! You seem real and exciting so would you be maybe interested in chatting online first to see if we're feeling each other? To prove to you that I am real, I uploaded all of my photos, phone #, and a special note for you only under my private profile page. This way I can weed out bots and scammers as I'm sick of them! I bet you'll be astonished to see who I am! :) To prove I am real, today's date is 11/12/2011.

That's just too much! Makes you wonder how much weirder it gets under the surface of it all.

Four years ago, I sold an Austin Healey to a guy whose son was going to school in Nigeria. He didn't have anything smaller than a four million dollar bank draft but he only wanted $300 in change (to cover the transaction fee). Anyway, I met with his banker and gave him $300, cashed the check, shipped the car to Nigeria, and everything worked out fine.

Why is everyone so paranoid?

Replacing my Canon 7D, Tokina 12-24mm, Canon 17-55mm, Sigma 30mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.4, and 150-500mm with a Panasonic Lumix FZ1000. I still have the 17-55 and the 30 available for sale.

What happens if the scammer agrees to gift you the payment? Are they still able to do a charge back?

You don't really get the payment (DUH!!). They send you a fake PayPal payment notification that links you to their site. When you try and log in to verify the payment, they capture your password - and then its a race to see how much they can get before you figure out you've been scammed.

Craigslist = Cash & Face to face.

If you follow Mistabernies advice above, you can avoid 90% of the time wasting nonsense and narrow your prospect list to actual prospective customers who are interested in what you are selling.

Try buying a car off Craigs List. I've been looking for a car for my son, and I see something that looks good and send an e-mail and I get back the generic scam email wanting me to respond so they have my email address.

Right now there is a 28-70 2.8L a guy wants to swap for a 10-22 EF-S. Wish I still had my 10-22 since the L is a $900+ lens and all I got for the 10-22 was $600
