I have a Western Digital USB 3.0 drive that's quirky. It sometimes works in USB
3.0 mode. It sometimes doesn't. I don't really care about the enclosure so I am going to break it open and take the 2TB WD Black drive out of it and install it in another enclosure.

Can you guys recommend me a nice one? Nothing crazy. Something like $50, give or take a few.

I don't want to bother with USB 3.0 anymore, although the Lexar USB 3.0 card reader works like a champ and it's most like the WD external drive that is the issue.

That said, if there's a good USB 3.0 enclosure out there, I am all ears. Otherwise, I'd be looking at an eSata enclosure.

Found this.

Looks tons better than the piece of crap WD ext drive. I bought the first generation one and they are known to have very crappy USB 3.0 connectors on the unit. As I mentioned before, my Lexar USB 3.0 card reader absolutely flies...so nothing wrong with the Mobo.

Do it..... I have two and they are simply fast and reliable. USB 2 is fast at about 32MB/s, USB 3.0 is ~100MB/s and SATA is ~100MB/s

Yup, bought the one I linked from Amazon. It's a USB 3.0 enclosure. I figured I would give it another shot since my Lexar USB 3.0 card reader works fine.

Now I gotta figure out how to break open the WD enclosure without messing the drive up. What a mistake it was buying that thing. I have the cheaper 2TB WD Elements USB 2.0 drives that work fine.

I guess with how prices are going crazy with hard drives, even with the additional cost for the enclosure, I'm still kind of coming out ahead...

you may run into some issues when you pull that drive out. When I pulled mine out and connected directly with a SATA cable I couldn't get windows to recognize it. Ended up having to format it to get the WD software off and it was fine. My older one that I cracked open didn't have that issue.

I have everything backed up on 2 other drives, so I'll just reformat it if need be. Hopefully that is not the case!

The drive is now out of the WD case. I tried to be gentle, but then gave up and pretty much cracked it open since I knew I was going to trash it. Will get the drive in the new enclosure once I get home.

Post back with how old your HD is and if Windows liked it once it was switched to an internal drive. Id be interested to see the results, I had the issue and my buddy has a drive hes trying to get the data off right now.

Actually, if you read my first post, I was trying to put it into another enclosure. :)

I did in fact do that just 10 minutes ago.

I am happy to report the drive was recognized and I did not have to reformat the drive. Also, on large files, such as 8GB movie files, I am getting transfer rates of 85-90MB/sec. For smaller camera RAW files I am getting around 45MB/sec, a lot faster than what I was getting in the old WD enclosure. The USB 3.0 connection is solid, unlike the one that was on the MyBook drive.

Good so far...
