Is there any risk associated with using high speed synch repeatedly in a short amount of time?

Is there a reason you type like this?

There's a report out from LPA, the makers of the PocketWizard flash triggers, that say there is a defect in some Canon 580exII flashes. Lots of people have had their flash suddenly stop functioning correctly while using the new PW's and HSS. They attribute the fault to that defect.

I haven't had any problems, myself, using HSS.
I should also say that rapidly firing the flash in a short amount of time can burn out the flash (depending on the model).

There is no you. There is only me.

Seems like you should be figuring this out yourself.

Joh Schell - Its a reference to a thought that suggests the world you live in is entirely a figment of your imagination.
By the by... I really like your "wind blown" photo from your 500 pixels port.

Thanks for the info klr.b
I use a 580 ex ii
My worry was asking the flash to fire thousands of times per second over and over would burn it out.

Then accordingly, any future troubles are only in your mind.

When I was in sixth grade, a few decades ago, our teacher asked, "how do you know all this isn't a dream?", in challenging us.

The only thing wrong with that notion however is; there is complete, logical and determined order! Dreams are nothing but disorder, are most often illogical, with events rarely determined by us. In addition, I cannot recall the last time I was walking down the beach (in a conscious state) only to be instantaneously transported to the moon whilst running from a barking purple frog.......

I've used HSS on my both my Canons' and Metz with never an issue, btw. :)

The danger of overuse of HSS is the same as the danger of overuse of any flash mode...thermal overload, which will cause a 580EXII to protect itself by slowing down the recycle rate so that the flash can cool. (The older 580EX will merely burn itself out...the newer 580EXII is more idiot proofed against thermal abuse causing burn out.)
