Japanese mafia payoffs. Always good to report at the board meeting - NOT.

So these were very serious allegations and it really rocked Olympus to its core although it's taken a while for the chairman to fall on his sword.

I am not sure that was the best phrase to use considering there is some precedence for that in not-to-distant Japanese history.

Sorry did I read that right - $700 000 000 paid to an adviser in the Cayman who closed soon after payment. I am willing to bet there is a whole lot more to that story and I am sure more than a few Olympus employees made out on that deal.

I would not be buying any shares just yet - not of a company who has just spent $1.3 billion on "advisers".

It happened last month when the president of JR Hokkaido (the national rail company) committed suicide after the company ran into some problems (not financial ones either).

I can see Olympus going under. Either Olympus will disappear off the face of the earth (as we know it) or will be merged with another company.

Sad really. Olympus historically produced some amazingly good products and were one of the "big five" from Japan. Who can remember the OM series of cameras?

Did you buy stock in the former K-mart and General Motors? How'd that work out?

Back to the stock comment though.....even if the name gets picked up by somebody else, the stock of a bankrupt company is worthless.

I work for a division of Olympus and there really isn't much worry about the ability of the company to carry on. For sure, this is one huge embarrasement, but the company is diverse enough to survive this trouble. It's too early to tell what the fallout is going to be, but I'm optimistic and everyone is working hard to make their groups successful.
