So am I hearing that the outer points are useless? The focus/recompose thing doesn't work too well. Especially with large apertures.

It does work on good light, a little bit challenging on low light, but I always have a speedlite on top so that helps out too for me. Focus/recompose doesn't work all the time for me either, so sometimes, I stick with the center point and crop later if possible.

I focus with the back button using the center point and then recompose, works great for me and I always shoot wide open. Just make sure you're not on AI Servo mode :)

How about one more dog, this one is from the Sunday finals. And now i'm starting to hate dogs and their owners after spending four full days shooting them and being surrounded by around 9000 dogs of various sizes and sorts.
