I noticed I cant get my 7D to shoot anywhere close to 8FPS with my 24-70L. Using the right settings (Very fast shutter, high speed shooting mode, fast CF card) it feels like it might be doing 3FPS... What am I missing?

Crank up the lighting or use exposure lock.

if im in Manuel mode would it even matter what the lighting is? lets say I have the settings at 1/1000, F2.8, iso 200, and the Highspeed setting. It should shoot at the 8FPS no matter what the light right?

No. It has to do with the new metering system. It's a bottleneck in certain situations. And it is documented in the manual.

What kind of lighting are you in? When I first got my 7 I noticed the same thing happening in low light. Through some research, it seems like in low light the metering system takes extra time to meter, and it slows the frame rate in doing so. Canon is apparently aware of the problem.

The way to work around it, even in manual mode, is to use the exposure lock button. This will override the camera's metering, and speed the camera back up.

Thanks guys! that sounds Like the issue. I had a feeling it might have something to do with that. I just figured if my settings were right in M mode it should do what I ask. Ill play around with it when I get home.

If it's similar to the 50D, there are two burst modes - make sure you have high speed burst selected (both show three little frames in the icon, but the high-speed mode has an "H" in the lower right corner).

Can you shoot 8FPS with other lenses?

If not, another thing to look for is to check and see if you have high ISO noise reduction turned on (see P 208 in manual). Having it on will slow down the FPS.

You say it feels like 3 fps? You sure you have it on the right high-speed setting?

There is a 3fps and then a 8fps mode.

*this is starting to smell like a LightRules moment* ;)

Ya, Im positive it was on the right mode, I do know the difference between the two. Im pretty sure the HIGH ISO noise reduction is turned on tho.. That might be causing it as well.

Turn off ALO, HINR and LENR, then test in bright light.

It was the the metering, I opened my window and sat in my dark room. Pointed the camera at the ground and held down the shutter then pointed the camera towards the sky out of the window and watched it go from about 3 a second to the full 8 :p thanks for your help guys. Knew it had to be something simple.

We have a couple of links in the 7D sticky that discuss the nuances of this issue. It might prove useful reading.

I think there is a workaround as well.

My goodness. I was reading the OP and even the wording is eerily similar
