OK...need to pick some brains here.....Last year I did the team photo for a local high school and they ended up winning the district championship. The AD now wants a copy of the original image to be used in the making of a vinyl banner.

I'm supposed to email it to a parent of one of the players, and this person is submitting it to someone local they know personally that's making the banner.

My questions are this:

  1. Should I mention in the email anything about a one time use license & no online or print publication...I just don't want this image spread around to everyone outside of the intended use of it.
  2. also, would anyone consider placing their logo below the photo (near the feet of the front row in the center) and state to them the logo needs to appear on the banner.

If you must do it that way, I'd put the conditions in the email & the image EXIF. Try the logo along with © & see if they go with it. What do you have to lose?

Thanks....That's basically what I ended up doing, said it comes with a one-time use license, stated it's prohibited to distribute or print and asked they give photo credits on the banner. I doubt this will happen, but time will tell if this 6mb file gets passed around electronically, it's only one photo.

1 - yes. One time use.
2 - No. Don't put your logo up, it's tacky.
2A - you need to be compensated for this photo. Since it's a school, it's unlikely they will have a big budget, but don't give it away for free or they will continue to expect everything for free.

I forgot to mention I did remove the logo before I sent it, just want them to put "Photography by" on it somewhere. I didn't want to charge for the one-time use because I'm on great terms with the AD and I do have all of the school's sports photos.

I think you did the right thing. Always notify people when you want to limit usage as most people don't understand copyright and will just assume they can use the image. Also think you were right to remove logo. A credit would be great and less tacky, hopefully they will include one.
