Took anothe 24hr ish trip to Death valley this weekend. There was some art festival going on there...but i had no idea about it..go figure. This shot almost didn't happen, i woke up in the truck around 4:30 and noticed nothing but dark clouds and feel the wind blowing against the truck. Decided to head to Zabriski point, do a quick grab of sunrise and head back to LA. I saw an opening to the east as I pulled into the Z parking lot..contemplated for a few minutes and started driving to Badwater at 5:30 for a 6:10 am sunrise.

Park the truck, put boots on..grab the lenses that i put in the thinktank belt and starting tumbling down the hill...OS! camera...its still in the truck..go back..get the camera and go down the hill again...at this point i can see some pink clouds all over the badwater area...literally..everywhere. I keep running (if you're visualizing..visualize a scene from run fatboy run), while running i keep telling myself..i will not be denied i will not be denied...then another OS moment ..no camera battery (actually that didn't happen but adds to the suspense).

i had a fairly good idea where i wanted to be to get the telescope peak shot, but the show was equally if not better towards Dante's view area. Finally after my lungs were on fire, throat parched, lips dry, shoulders hurting... i finally get to the spot...turn around, setup everything and capture this.

1ds III
17 TSE 3 shot Vertical pano
this is going to be printed 30x90, the detail is awesome...in the front pans i can see those tiny crystals sticking out...and far out see my truck on the road.

Awesome shot... and good for you. Many would just give up.

This is an activity that rewards those with patience and dedication. If you don't have these then you're destined for less and hoping you get lucky.

Nice work, I'll bet that shot looks fantastic large!

Beautiful shot Sunny...kudos for not turning back. You may want to check the horizon line at the base of the mountains...it looks ever so slightly off with an upward tilt to the right.

Awesome shot and story. How far out were you? That's one spot I haven't done in DV yet.

Beautiful shot! I'm planning on heading there in a few days. Is the light good around badwater for sunset as well, or is it just sunrise? I see plenty of pictures, but never know if they're AM or PM. Since the valley runs North-South, I hope it's both... ;-)a

Where did you find these pristine salt polygons? I was there the week before Thanksgiving and couldn't find any areas that looked this nice. I probably walked a mile out from the road to where the salt was mostly untouched, but I couldn't find any like this. Apparently it had rained the day before I went there, so maybe that had an effect.
