Take a look at David Weber's
Safehold series - SFish but in a world going through the transition from galleys to square riggers. If you like his writing there, he's got bunches of "Hornblower in Space" in his Honor Harrington series. Or look at Eric Flint's Grantville series, about a WV town transported to the 30 Years War.

Excellent book. He flew 25 missions in B-17s during WWII (8th Air Force), including the Schweinfurt raids. Returned to the States to train new crews & decided that that was the most hazardous duty of all & volunteered to fly 50 more combat missions.
