I've been playing with exposure blending a lot lately and trying to learn new techniques. My goal in processing these was to create images which match what my eye saw while there. Here's a couple recent shots from a hike in Rocky Mountain National Park. These are not tonemapped, but the dynamic range of each is well beyond a single shot.

Getting cold up there.

I really liked the stars in #1. Did you combine two separate shots (above and below the horizon)? I get star-trails after just 30 sec with my 10mm.

#2 is also great – both in how the vanishing point is placed and how you have captured the light in the clouds above the mountains. Well done :-)

I have to say that you've honed your exposure blending techniques very well Jon. I really like both shots...I can almost see the steam from your breath as you shot these.

Did you take any shots after the sun rose? I'd love to see some views with the sun glinting off the snow.

Oh, and I think you should have stood about 10ft further to the right in order to look straight up the frozen lake. :D :D

The first image is a blend of two images 20 & 70 seconds, 16mm, f/2.8, ISO 800. I agree with you about the star trails at 30 seconds. At 20 seconds you can just get away with it.

No steam that morning as the wind was blowing in our faces at a consistent 30 MPH. There is a huge difference in body temp from when your hiking these vs standing around while shooting and to be honest we're still in the figure it out stage. We didn't stick around to long after these shots because we were freezing.
