This bridge, built in 1976, was once the longest single arch span in the world. China now has two longer ones. It is 876 feet from the bridge down to the New River, where these were taken. It was an adventure driving through the gorge. The annual Bridge Day is even more exciting, because BASE jumpers made over 400 jumps from the bridge. One was injured when his chute failed to deploy, allowing him to hit the water at 65 mph.

Great shots! It's also the second highest bridge in the US. Colorado has the highest, Royal Gorge bridge I think it's called. I love the New River Gorge area, it's only 15 minutes from my house. I go there often to take pictures.

Thanks, Tom. Yes, I've also walked across the Royal Gorge Bridge, which is about 1000 feet above the river. You live in a great area. We stayed in Summersville Lake for 11 days and really enjoyed it. Lots of wonderful scenery around there. In fact, we loved all of WV and may well go back in the future.

Nice pictures. Hubby and I did a WV motorcycle trip back in '07. We happened upon this bridge on Bridge Day. What an amazing thing to witness.

Did you visit Glade Creek Grist Mill while you were in the area?

ETA: I have been checking out how to get to Douglas Falls. It says that the road is VERY bumpy, they highly recommend taking an SUV. What was your experience getting there?

Thanks very much, Sharon. This latest Bridge Day must have had several thousand motorcycles in attendance. Quite an experience.

We did visit the mill at Babcock SP. Here is my post of photos from there.

The road to Douglas Falls is in pretty bad shape, with huge potholes and a rough bridge to cross. We met a man there in a mid-size sedan who was unable to drive across the bridge. He parked near there and walked to the falls, maybe 1/2 mile. I have an SUV and had no problems. Most of the potholes can be skirted, but not all. Driving slow is essential. It is worth the effort, even if you have to walk.

So I guess taking a Harley Davidson back this road would be a big no-no:lol:?!?!?!? That is usually how we like to tour. Wind in your face:).

With a motorcycle, you can easily avoid the potholes and the bridge would be no problem with clearance. Best way to get there. Watch for some nice waterfalls near the bridge, and some small waterfalls and cascades near the parking at the end. Then go past the barricade and down to the stream. From there, go as far as you like, either the trail in the gorge or the one up top.

Thank you. Not quite as dramatic as a real, live view, but I'm happy with it.

Thanks, Frank. Last I heard the guy was "stable" with spine and lung injuries. It happened before I arrived.
