Just tipping our toes into studio light units as a job we were given (photographing and printing artists paintings) is proving very difficult. With a controlled shooting setup we are hoping the problems with colour matching and brightnss will be resolved. That's the plan anyway.
Know next to nothing about studio light setups and have never shot with one. Funds are limited and so we are looking at good old ebay and basically China sourced stuff.
Any comments on either of the following

I've heard that the flurescent type bulbs used in the second link aren't very good, any comment on this appreciated, any help at all much appreciated.

Using a Canon 450D Tamron 28-75 and shooting in Adobe RGB on our shaded deck. Some shots very good straight off, some all over the place and needing much editing. This is a new venture for us (primarily my wife, she is wanting to start a home or small shopfront printing business) but wastage and redos at the moment is killing the profits.

Thanks in advance,

Hal55

-You'll have problems with color if you don't use color corrected fluorescent bulbs. I'm not sure what type of bulbs are coming with that second kit.
-Backdrops are great when they are vinyl. The muskin or cloths types get lint on them and are a pain to keep cleaning up for shots.

I've got those lights :)
they are fine, do a good job to be honest, however....
they take about 5 seconds after each shot to come back to the same power.
there are slight variances in levels (checked with a meter).
there is no fan in them, so don't leave them on for more than 2 hours without a break.

other than that I like them, decent for the price.

to step up a level try lencarta or something similar, more expensive but quality is a bit better.

however, those ebay lights (mine are branded neewer but are the same thing) are a decent starting point.

Looking at the modifier mount, I would never buy them as the seem to use some kind of "universal" i.e. screws friction mounting against the strobe body. I'd rather find something with a more "standard" mount system like elichrome/Bowens S/Balcar(AB's/einstein/WL) as you will be much esier to find modifiers that will stay put in the strobes.

The softboxes with the "universal" mount are not that bad. I picked up one because it was so cheap ($15 USD shipped) just to hack up on a speedlight project. I liked it enough and bought a second. (again at $15) They are more than adequate for non-demanding use. But I wouldn't spend a lot on them. Up to now I had only bought softboxes & octaboxes with a Bowens mount.

Stepping up to a Bowens mount setup would not be a bad idea but it would probably cost $50 more per light and $20 more per softbox. A significant increase. At that point I also would get better radio triggers.
