Hi, I've been using a Metz 54 mz4 with 3102 M2 module on my 20D for many years with no problem. However, when I tried it on my 7D, there was no eTTL II and no communication with camera. I can use the flash in Manual mode though.
Do I have to buy a 3102 M5 module, or maybe there is an option to upgrade a software on my old 3102 M2? I've heard it's possible, but I'm not sure.

You theoretically need the M3 module, not the M2 firmware, even for the 20D to work correctly with the Metz 54MZ ! Metz states the M4 version supports G9, S5 IS, EOS 40D, EOS 1DS MkIII, but does not list M5 support on that PDF file. Hmmm, now I need to figure out if I need to upgrade M3 to M4 firmware, and what changes (if any) result with my 40D!

Wilt, you are right. I do have an M3. I just got confused because it says M2 on the side, but the sticker inside says M3.
The one sold at B&H is M5, and according to reviews there it should work fully with 7D. So should I go ahead and buy it, or there's a way to upgrade my M3 firmware to M5? I went to Metz site and there is nothing about 54mz4, and upgrade links come up as Error page.

I sent an email to Manfrotto US about firmware upgrades, and just got back this reply:

Manfrotto US tech support dept wrote:
Firmware updates allow the flash unit to communicate with the newer cameras; mostly you would need a firmware update if you are using the flash with a newer camera...the updates are free, you would just need to send them in to us along with a short note on which firmware you would want.

BTW, their address is in Rasmey NJ

Thanks, Wilt! I emailed them today too, got a reply almost right away that I should send a module to them for firmware update and the cost is free! Great, I was about to buy a new one.

Yes, I saw that, but they are an hour and a half drive from me, so I will rather mail it.

Thanks again for your input!
Alex
