It's fast enough for most indoor sports, your only problem is keeping your shutter speed fast enough to prevent camera shake at 135mm (no IS on 135L :( )

yeah, I was thinking that with my canon 7D to up the iso fast enough, I guess up near 3200 or 4000 iso.. getting ready for some indoor basketball but dont want to shoot with flash..
I have an old sigma 70-200 2.8 that doesnt seem to do the trick for indoor shooting under bad gym lights...

Probably because the rebate will be over and Canon doesn't give rebates for the 135L often.

I really want the 135L, but already blew my (cash) wad on a 70-200/4 IS

Joe,

I took 2 bodies to basketball games last season. The 7D usually had the 85mm f/1.8 for shooting game action. The 135L went on the 5D for taking sideline pics of fans, cheerleaders, coaches, parents, scoring table, etc. This way, I didn't have to be close to anybody (using the 135) and could get the good candid shots of the other stuff that goes on during HS basketball games.

Other shooters have been using the 135L and getting great results at volleyball games shooting action.

Focus is pretty quick and accurate on the 135L, but not quite as fast as your 85mm f/1.8. The f/2 is great indoors using available light as well.

Good choice on the lens. You won't be disappointed!

dave

Hello again,
yeah I am going to take my 7D with the 85mm then I have a 50D where I will use the 135mm.
Then switch the lens and bodies to make some good test.. at my next basketball game.

***Question: If I have a 135mm on the 7D, lens = 216mm view on the crop body and everyone says it one of the sharpest lens canon makes.
What will the Canon white lens 200mm f2L give me that will be better. I just saved three grand by not buying the 200 f2L white lens . just asking??? of course I dont have the extra 3 grand.

thanks
Joe

So your strategy was to put the 85 on a crop body giving a FOV = 136mm FF equiv
Then you used a 135mm on your FF? So that 1mm must make all the difference?
