I regularly have a problem with my Mode dial getting moved when the camera is by my side. Obviously the camera brushes again my side turnign the dial. Yesterday during a wedding this happened three time, moved for "M", to "C3". Sometime ago I ready of a company that will put some kind of protector or shield around the dial to keep that from happening. Anyone know of this company or other aftermarket solutions.

I'd love to see something like this also for the 7D body, I've had similar issues with bumping the knob accidentally and ending up in some mode that I dont want to be in

If you put your nose close, you can sniff it then you will see everything clearly

Canon offers this service for a flat fee of $100:

That buys a lot of gaffers tape--the old sportsshooters standby.

Thanks Dave K.

I personally use the gaffers tape to lock the settings on my lenses--but the expectations on the sideline are different from the foyer and bridezilla.

Glad to help. ;)

I am going to tape it for my last two weddings of the year and then send it in to Canon for a fix. I very rarely leave "M" but would like to have the option without having to remove tape. Canon wasn't thinking very clearly when they left the dial so open.

Sure they were thinking...... "Of charging an extra $100.00 for the Mode Dial Lock"

Nah, it wasn't a planned scam.

It's been a problem for years... that dial being vulnerable to bumps. The 10D through 50D, both 5Ds and 7D all have the same problem. Probably some earlier models too, that I'm forgetting or never used.

The 1D series use buttons instead of a dial. The Rebel/xxxD series have the dial on the other "shoulder" of the camera, where it's less prone to getting bumped.

Some of the older film cameras had simple little locking buttons on dials, seemed sensible to do the same on the modern DSLRs.

Finally, Canon heard their users complaints and added the locking dial to the 60D. And it just so happens it can be retrofitted to 7D and 5D Mark II, too (but not any other models, AFAIK).

Cost, I dunno... Seems a little high. I'll have to price the parts. It's probably less than an hour's work to swap it out. Probably 5 or 10 minutes after doing the first one and learning how. With three cameras needing it, I might do the conversion myself, if the kit of parts isn't too expensive.

Meanwhiles, black graffer tape doesn't look bad (and peels back easily to allow changing the settings).
