I'm considering replacing my Gitzo Mountaineer 1541 and RRS BH-40 with a 0541 and BH-30. Planning a trip to the Canadian Rockies next summer and need to go as light as possible (I'm no longer a Spring Chicken). I do not and would not use the center column.
I have a 5DII, 24-105. Largest/heaviest lens I would use on this is a 70-200, 70-300 or 16-35 (none of which I own, but I can dream!)

I have a RRS TVC-33 (absolutely awesome) which I use for video and can adapt if I ever rent any heavy artillery. I can only own two tripods of this quality.
I like my 1541, it's just if I can shave even a pound or two and make travel easier I'll really appreciate it, and can carry more in the way of an extra lens, etc.

I know it's not going to be as stable as my current rig, but I've never come close to having an issue with my current setup.
Opinions?

Sounds to me like youve already got it figured out. Youve got your super stable support setup covered with the RRS TVC-33 setup, now youre just looking for the very light weight compact solution for the times you need it. I put my kit together the same. That being the case, doesnt seem like theres much "advice" to give you. Except maybe have you checked out the new traveler tripod RRS is coming out with? Check out their new 2012 catalog page 34. Its called the TQC-14.

Thanks Ben. I was aware of the TQC but was disappointed that it came in at the same weight as my 1541, for which it seems to an alternative. I was hoping they'd release something even lighter.

I love my Gitzo GT0530 + Markins Q3 for hiking at only 2.5 lbs.

No mean to hijack this thread...

I just found out TQC-14 today and looks very interesting. I now own a TVC-34 for heavy duty but I also had a TVC-24 for air-travel exclusively from earlier this year.

The TSA agencies in Taiwan announce that no carry-on tripod is allowed from Taiwan so I found that the sacrifices I made was wasted (no size limit if I had to check anyway). I was looking to sell my 24 to gain some money back and possibly get a cheaper Gitzo or Chinese brand.

Do you recommend I stick to 24 as my compact travel tripod, or sell it and get one of those cheaper travelers? The fold length/weight of TQC-14 looks awfully similar to TVC-24, and I suspect it will only be adequate to my minimal setup - 7D plus kit, in low light. I also felt like the value of RRS tripods are on their heavy-duty side, when shrink down there is more authentic than performance - just my 2 cent..

I have a Gitzo 1-series for travel and a 3-series for solid work. I would suggest that same combo in RRS now that they have a travel tripod.

As Ben said you seem to have it figured out. I think I might get a lighter travel tripod too if I was camping out for long periods of time. My use is more urban though with only occasional forays into the mountains, my rig which is a Benro traveler with Markins Q3T weighs 3.6 lbs total, a lot less than my regular series-3 systematic.

I'm a bit disappointed in the specs RRS have so far published for the TQC-14. I'd sell the TVC-24 and get an inexpensive Chinese traveler. I've used a Benro C2680T for well over a year now and it has been very reliable.

Although I mentioned this in another thread, I noticed B&H has a further price reduction on the GT0531. Down (with rebate) from $410 to $375. Maybe I can keep my 1541 as well...:D
