Canon seems to be deliberately forcing those who use the 1D series cameras into the ultra-expensive full frame model whether we need it or not. I, for one, do not have an employer buying my gear for me and can not in any way imaginable afford an almost $7k body.

I'll grab a MkIV and hang onto it along with my current MkIII and will regretfully have to look to something else, hopefully in the Canon line, when its time to replace those cameras.

I suppose from a manufacturing standpoint it makes sense for them to merge the 1D and 1Ds lines when the technology allows it, but from a cost-effective standpoint of the end user its just a really bad deal, IMO

£1500 more than the 1DMKIV, I can see the sports guys lose out, possibly need longer lenses too. Then again it appears on paper to trump the Nikon D3s in every department so they may not lose too many customers.

Consumer grade?
I shot a Carolina Panthers game 2 weekends ago and I saw more 7Ds than anything else.
Contrary to popular belief I do not believe such labels as consumer grade or prosumer. Though a Canon XT would not be the ideal choice for sports it can get the job done in capable hands.

Nothing says you need to buy the new camera when it is released.
Why do you say you are being forced to buy anything?
You can continue to use your existing camera for many years to come.

You could always wait for the 1DX MkII to be released and take advantage of the price drop on the 1DX MkI.

You are half right ....... the 60d is consumer grade ( because it has an SD card slot! )

IMO, Canon is poised to "own" both FF and APS-C in the near future. At least they can if they go with a lineup like:

1DX - Everyday Flagship
1DsX - Full of Alien Technology @ north of 35Mp (Maybe)
5DMk3 - Pro FF (Maybe)
7DMk2 - Pro Crop (Maybe .. And, people get their "reach" back)
70D - Serious Amateur Body (Maybe)
T4i - Why move from P&S to dSLR with anything else? (Maybe)
