I am going to Puerto Rico in early December. I'll bring some of my gear with me, but I was wondering if there were any good options for shooting in the water.

I am mainly look at the waterproof P & S cameras. Not looking for professional underwater housing and all of that.

So any recommendations would be much appreciated.

A lot of P&S underwater cameras are only good for snorkelling depths. This isn't usually too much of a problem, as light levels fall off fairly quickly as you go deeper, and anything below typical snorkelling depths would require additional lighting.

Can't recommend any specific models though, as I've not used any of them.

I had pretty much the same question and asked it here:

https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1092726

a couple people responded with some suggestions but didn't give any real reviews or experiences with them, just threw out camera models. If you end up finding something good, I'd be interested in hearing it.

Here's a thread on POTN of underwater shots from various people and cameras. You can make your own conclusions.

I have the Canon D10 and it has worked very well both in the water and on land. My daughter also has one and takes it on shallow dives. There are lots of options out there. I have also had the underwater case for my G9 and it is ok but sometimes it is hard to see the lcd screen in certain lighting conditions.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

I bought the underwater case for my G12 and was very happy with it for the price ($160). Beats buying a $4K case for my 5DmkII.

I used it for diving, surfing, and snorkeling and got some great shots.

Thanks all, and thanks Crissa for the offer. You are too kind! :)

Yeah, it'll be snorkeling stuff. Nothing deep. Plus taking some shots of the nephew while they swim, etc. I'm eying the more recent ones...like the Lumix and Sony with 1080p capability. I mean, might as well buy a nice one that'll replace the Canon PowerShot P & S we are using at the moment. Well...of course it has to be waterproof though...

You are going to my Homeland. Make sure to visit El Yunque tropical forrest, The old fire station in Ponce and go to Aguadilla and Isabella to enjoy the sun and the beach. If you are looking for a in expensive point and shoot with housing i will recommend Intova. That's the camera i use when i go diving and it can hold up to 180 feet.

I feel you on that one. Fish are not the best subject for Photography they get scared easy and move around a lot. Even tho i took the underwater photography course i still find my self with very few keepers because of this and dive partners with little patients.

I think the best budget option would be an s90 with the canon UW casing. You should be able to find them both pretty cheap now that the s90 is 3 generations old. Alternatively the s95 + its canon housing would work too if you want something newer, and at $299 for the s95 on amazon its quite a bargain.
