I have been using a B+W CPL-filter (non MRC version) during the last 5 months. Many of my photos has been completely destroyed because of issues with horrible flaring. Sometimes I get flaring just because the sky is bright, (without any direct sunlight involved!) I know the flaring is all because of the cpl-filter, because there is no flaring when I remove it.

But I do want to use a CPL-filter for my photos, so now I'm thinking about upgrading to the MRC version.

Just 2 questions. How much will the MRC coating help me to prevent flaring? Is there any other brand I should look into?

Cheers!

Here is what one manufacturer's (Hoya) coatings do for their various levels of filters

Green/blue box filters (single coat): transmit 93-94% of light

HMC/Digital Pro 1 filters: transmit 97% of light

HD: transmits 99.35% of light

SHMC: transmits 99.7% of light

The B+W MRC transmits about 99.7% of light (IIRC)

This test show the difference of 99+% (good filter) vs. 93% (cheap filter)

I use B&W mrc filters and notice no flaring during the day, at night i sometimes see flaring.

If i shoot at night i take off all filters.

Multicoated filters will help prevent bad flare, but it won't kill it. If you absolutely hate flare, you can always work around it (change your angle, use a hood, etc.).

Thanks for the replies everyone. That was all I needed to know.

I think I'm gonna go with the B+W xs-pro nano MRC type. Seems to be a great filter!
