I've already bought a canon-mount variant lens, so it's too late to go the Nikon route with Canon adapter/chip. The chip topic has been discussed in the Samyang 14mm lens thread, but I'd rather start a thread about it in case someone else searches down the road. I've already decided on getting a chip, so please don't try to convince me to live without it :)

I've been reading up and sorting through the different chips and have narrowed the choice down to 3:
1. Optix v5 (with focus trap feature (external link) for $29 shipped
2. Tagotech's focus chip, which has gotten some recommendations elsewhere on POTN (external link) for $24 shipped
3. This cheaper chip, which appears to have all of the basic necessary features (external link) (including setting distance/aperture, manual adjustments, etc) for $10

I'm really appreciate it if someone who's tried multiple chips can weigh in on what's better and why. I've already ruled out the cheapo chips ($4-$7) which sets it at 50mm f/1.4 and only provides the focus-beep feature.

I have tried this on my Zeiss C/Y mount for my 5D. I am very happy with the performance so far.

I put the Tagotech chip on my Samyang 14mm (which I've now sold). It worked fine - but to be honest, treat MF focus confirm as a guide only - it's not super accurate. A few tips:

- I didn't glue the chip on. It seemed to me that was a good way to get lots of glue into the lens. Instead, I used double-sided sticky tape which worked extremely well. It's plenty strong enough, sticks instantly and lets you adjust the position if necessary. Even though the Tagotech chip comes with an alignment tool, I still found I had to jiggle it a little to get it to work.

- On the Samyang, you'll need to raise the height of the chip a little to make it connect properly with the contacts in the camera. I cut a shim from an old credit card and this worked very well.

- For reasons I can't rationalise in my head (!), I found the focus confirm was more accurate when I programmed the chip to tell the camera that the lens was in 'MF' mode, rather than 'AF' mode. For this reason alone, you might want to consider the Tagochip (or other types) that have programmable settings for such things.

Hope this helps!

Paul

I remember reading (but can't find where) that Samyang used the Dandelion as the "built in" chip on the Nikon mount version of the 14mm.

I prefer the Dandelion over the Optix for my M42 lenses.. Much easier to micro-adjust (on the chip, not the camera).

I am going to get the samyang 14mm. If I get the Nikon version and a chipped Nikon to eos adapter, will the camera still meter normally (aperture priority and manual)?

I bought the nikon mount 14 f/2.8 Rok and a nikon --> Canon lens mount adapter that had a AF confirm chip built in - claimed to be "dandelion" Tested and did not work well. EXIF reports some oddball FL depending on what the chip sends. Returned both :)

You're better off using live fiew IMO. Using the precision focusing screen on my 5D II w/ MF was worse with this lens, since DoF is quite broad anyway, and the viewfinder dims substantially with an f/2.8 lens. Your best bet is to use the normal focusing screen IMO.

How does an accessory focus chip work...

Would it be possible to get one for use with my 400mm f/5.6L + 1.4x TC when focusing in the manual mode?
