Not sure, but you could always purchase an inexpensive card reader to transfer it...

just take a copy of the software on the memory card itself, thats what I do, if you are taking DPP, take v1 (the one that doesnt need the original cd to instal) and the latest one 3.10 I think and you're set. Also take a usb cable, plug in and it should pick up as additional drive, transfer/instal software and it'l then let you transfer the pics. My camera would let me see folders but not the pictures when connected directly to pc, after installing software I could see everything. trial run it before you go though to make sure.

On my PC with windows7, it was able to detect the memory card as removeable storage without installing any software. You could always try to use it on another PC with the same OS as your friend and see what happens.

yes, no special software is required but memory cards are really cheap, why bother with portable hard drives and laptops

Get yourself a second memory card ans a USB card reader. The card reader is easier, faster, and way less problematic.

Hmm, how many cards would you recommend for two months?

AJ-47, get a card reader.

Why don't you purchase an additional card?
I would never travel with less than 2 cards (I actually carry 3) as you never know how many shots you could take on an outing. The same goes for batteries .. I always carry a charged spare.

I would definitely agree -- having at least one backup card and one backup battery for me would even be a question!

As to the OP, a card reader is certainly faster and more efficient than plugging the camera in. But it still wouldn't hurt to have the Canon software. Do you have the CDs that came with your camera? If so, you could copy the contents onto your portable hard drive and run the installs for the apps. The ones of interest: EOS Utilities can connect with your camera to download and do other tasks. ZoomBrowser EX can also connect with your camera, but also has a photo browser and a simple little jpeg editor. The third "major" app is Digital Photo Professional, which is "primarily" a Raw processor, but also has some tools for jpegs.

We need a camera side app that allows us to dump data to a drive without a pc....surprised Canon hasn't done it already.

Yes you can--at least with XP or Windows 7

The company I work for has made our pc's "dumb" by locking out the hard drives.

I can still download to the desktop using paint or windows picture viewer--just not the hard drive.

You can get a decent netbook for around $200--less than 3 pounds with a good size hard drive and the ability to run your favorite imaging software S L O W L Y!

2 months and you're only taking 1 card....

I just went down to the Panama Canal for 2 weeks and I took 3 cameras and used 6 cards.. I downloaded all of them to a laptop each day just for backup..

I would say that you aren't really prepared for serious photography :D

.... Got some cameras; got some glass ..... I just need one more of each.....

Here's a primer if you really want to use the built-in Windows application:

There are devices that are both portable "drives" and viewers -- several years ago I picked up an Epson P-5000 for this -- it has card slots that handle CF cards and could download and display shots and so is nice for, say, an event where you just can't bring a laptop.

'Course these days everyone has an iPhone-type of device, but for us "old fashioned" photographers who use "real" cameras, something like the Epson can come in handy...
