I am just curious for those who have prints made to hang at home or for sale, what are your preferances, metallic, E-surface other? Does the choice depend on subject matter?

for sale yes i think it does personally. however for home i prefer canvas or foamex, or wasabi paper (japenese/chinese) it has the grain going in all directions and gives it a nice rusticy feel and brings up tones if printed litho. its hard to find a place to print on fomex but it can look very good.

It does for me, so you might say what your subject matter is.
Generally, I start with a lustre finish, which is one step down from glossy.

I would highly recommend metallic for landscapes. This also works well with sepia or alternate tone images including portraits and dark or night images. Get a metallic print made for yourself and you will see. I have many in my home and I suggest this to my customers as well. I've had nothing but great comments made about the metallic.

I have these 2 images in my home printed on metallic in 20x30 size under glass and I just can't say enough about how well they look in metallic.
Obviously, these are the web versions on Flickr with border, but you get the idea.

Thanks for this. I have tried canvas with some good results but I'll have to give foamex & wasabi surfaces a try.

Nice images. I have recently begun using metallic surfaces for some landscapes and like it.

For my B&W digital I prefer epson premium luster. Some stuff on my walls. All 13 X 19....

And like photoguy mentioned for me it depends on what I'm the subject is.

I use red river polar luster 75lb. I compared it to the Epson and it is exactly the same output. I like it better than the epson because it is heavier and has a bit deeper luster. I have compared it to glossy epson as well and even though the luster reflects the light more, it just looks so much better on a luster. There is a richness that I just can't put my finger on!

That said, I have 15 sheets of Metallic from red river that I still need to print a few landscapes on. Can't wait. I have a pano of peyto lake that I'm itching to print on the 13"x38" metallic.

Metallic paper kinda reminds me of old Ciba Chrome and usually prefer a softer, less contrasty look for landscapes.
