I looked for a thread and can't locate anything concerning the subject.....What set up do you use? My 5d with my 50 1.8 works in the lowlight just can't get wide and miss catch light. Anyone use a 24-105 without flash? Or set up remote flash to bounce for catch light? any and all comments are apprecitated, Happy Thanksgiving to all!

I just picked out a "thanksgiving set-up". I decided to go with a 35 f1.4 lens on a FF body with a 580 flash. :)

Are you saying you want to set up one of your flashes remotely? That could be useful if you have some type of modifier, an umbrella or softbox or some such thing.

But you'd also need some kind of support for the flash and modifier, and also a way of triggering it, as in a wireless trigger.

But, you can get a good flash bounce by having the flash mounted on your tripod and angling your head up to bounce off the ceiling. The light would "bounce around" to give your subjects a more "diffused" illumination.

And there is another thing you can do, which is to mount a "bounce card" on your flash head. With your head pointed up, some of the light will be bounced off the card to your subjects, providing some additional "fill" as well as some catchlight for the eyes.

A bounce card can be as simple as a white index card partially wrapped around the flash head, or something bigger and more ornate that you could construct yourself. A current POTN thread is discussing indoor flash photography, and starting at post #11 a discussion starts on bounce cards, and a couple posts later someone posts a link to a "Do It Yourself" (DIY) Bounce Card tutorial, showing how to make them but also showing the effect of a bounce card. Here's the thread:

Well, good for you that you went the DIY route! And, the bounced flash shot was definitely better than the direct flash shot -- don't you agree?

Hmm -- a P&S should be OK at ISO 400, but I suppose it depends, oh well. To be save, yeah, 200 or 100 then, though, you might struggle if you are trying to pick up ambient light...

from my quick tests.. seems the on camera is pretty good... but if you got the time go for it.. im not sure i will have time.. thus will not do the off camera as i think it will take me a bit to get it right... really busy till we go do dinner.. but however maybe ill play around.. hah... more to come..

and enjoy making the card.. was ooober easy..
