Hello everyone,

I'm brand new to this forum and have a few questions. From what I can see everyone here is VERY knowledgeable and friendly with advice

I have a 1 1/2 year old 50D body with @ 12K actuations and running on ver 1.0.7 firmware.

As far as maintenance goes is there anything I should be doing / looking at ?

I know there are newer firmware versions but will they really do anything for me ?

Thanks in advance for your answers !

If your built in sensor cleaning is doing the job there is no maintenance needed--if not a wet cleaning may be in order.

The rubber grips will start to lose color over time--wipe them down with a damp cloth and do NOT use a silicone based product like Armor All.

Firmware upgrades often contain little tweaks that may not be listed in the official description--I've always done them and never experienced a problem. Back it the day it was suggested that you used a 1gb or smaller card. Not sure if that still applies but I do it out of habit.

Other than keeping the salt spray off your camera there is really not much else.

And don't sweat the 12K--I've had several XXD bodies with shutter counts over 100.

Welcome to the neighborhood ;)

^^That pretty much sums it up :) I have a 20D that's still going strong, your 50D will be good for quite some time yet.

Welcome to the gang :)

I'm using firmware 1.0.7 also. The current version is 1.0.8, but I don't think I'll bother with it. Here's what they say:

Q: What are the fixes and improvements provided with Firmware Version 1.0.8?

A: The following improvements and fixes have been incorporated.
1. Improves writing/reading speeds when using UDMA 7-compatible CF cards.
The reading/writing speeds of UDMA 7-compatible CF cards are the same as UDMA 6 CF cards.
2. Fixes incorrect indications in the Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Arabic, Swedish, Spanish, Portuguese, Thai and Turkish menu screens.
