Well Nikon was never really into the megapixel wars, were they?

If you look at the D700, it has 12 MP? So 18 seems the most realistic.

Maybe you are on to something!

Hmmm.. DX mode on an 18 megapixel camera equates to 8 megapixels.
I think that's quite plausible.
How about a guess on the release date? (... because Canon won't be far behind with a competitor.)

Several cameras and more glass than I will admit to.

I'm still waiting for Canon to release a competitor to the D700.

That depends whether the D800 is designed to be more like the D3s, or the D3x.

Or maybe we are really looking at two models - an 18MP version with fast burst speed, and a 36MP D800x with a slow burst speed.

Aren't they in two different classes?

Yep - one's an action camera, the other seems to be more general-purpose.

But, generally, I find that capabilities/intended use is a more useful way to differentiate 'classes' of cameras than price. i.e. I'd consider put the 7D and 1D4 into the same class, and the 5D2 and 1Ds3 into the same class.

Pricewise yes but practically (based on my experience with D700) IQ and AF; they can be compared.
