Somewhere here on another site someone suggested Resize Magic was better than CS5 for resizing because it used Lanczos. Here are two comparisons

CS5

Lanczos. Notice the pattern on the buildings.

Scroll down to the bottom to see a Java-script enabled comparison of a bunch of algorithms, etc. Also, open the original tiff in the OP's link and convert to a linear, 32 bit profile and use bilinear - or convert to linear profile in 16 bit and use bicubic.

That is quite distracting and immediately obvious.

Thanks for the link. During my testing I did not see a whole lot of difference between CS5 and Lanczos until this one. I did use both as a part of a resizing sharpening action I use. The process was similar in every way except the resizing part. I'll try both stand alone.

IMO Adobe has made some great improvements to their resizing algorithms with CS5.

I'm wondering in the comparison of the Resize Magic and the CS5 if this isn't just an off chance that the brick pattern at the resize resolution created a moire pattern. I'd be currious to see how it would look if resized differently.

Actually it does not look like it has anything to do with Resize Magic. When I tried both on their own the results were the same. I tried the two actions again and I got the pattern with Resize Magic. It is odd because I just copied my original CS5 action and replaced the downsizing part (which is at the start of the action) to Image Magic. I made no other changes to the action. All the sharpening, etc is after.

I'm using this method and created an action for it. The action starts out with resizing and there is a stop so I can enter the size. I entered the same size for both actions.

Resizing is not part of this earthbound procedure.

The stand alone results. I see no difference.

Just to be really fair I tried another image. That brick wall was from my 30D which I use to test stuff on. A little old and not same size. I tried a files from my 5D2.

Did that software actually put those artifacts in that image?

Which software? Resize Magic or the action I created using the Earthbound sharpening technique?. Resize Magic works fine on it's own but it does not seem to like being in my action for some reason. Based on my tests I don't see enough of a difference between CS5 and RM to worry about it so I deleted the action that had RM. I am just going to continue to use the CS5 action. Not worth the effort to trouble shoot it and you have to pay to unlock RM to get those grey squares out of it.

There are large rectangular blocks all throughout that lanczos shot.

That is the trial version. Those blocks are imbedded until you pay for it. I never did because I was not sure but I'm not buying it now.

Wow!
Quick test in CS5 shows that you need to go to 32bit for scaling to be mathematically correct. Disappointed with Adobe right now. :(

You can convert to a color space with a gamma of 1.

I was just on Neil van Niekerk's forums and there was a resizing question as well. Some suggested to try Perfect Resize.

http://www.ononesoftware.com …suite/perfect-resize/?ind (external link)

I downloaded the trial version and played with multiple files. I did not see a hugh difference between PS and PR. Not a $100 one anyway. However I did spot this. No matter what size I tried the same thing. I took the sharpening to 0 to make things equal as with PS I just used image size only. PR has a texture control which I set to zero and then back to default with no change.

PR looks a bit crisper in some areas but I have not done any sharpening yet. Not sure it is me or the software. I know people give PS a hard time about resizing but CS5 does a pretty good job IMO.

Assuming the "bend" isn't in the original, that's pretty weird…
