I Missed Again

I wanted to nail a VIA RAIL Silver Bullet liveried train in action, but as my luck goes I missed again. While waiting at a couple locations where I had hoped it would pass by, I did catch shots like these, but its kinda like settling for a field goal when you fail to punch it in for a touchdown.

Here is a possible vacation idea for you if you like train shots. I took a shot of a train at the north end of Neys Provincial Park while travelling from Wpg to TO.

I came across this site while trying to find out exactly where I took the shot.

I already knew about the North Shore trip, and may do it, but kinda trying to plan a trip to the Rockies next spring or fall if possible. Just sorting through some stuff to get some ideas, on flights, rental cars, lodging etc etc.

I have been out there before, but it wa smore of a just apssing through kinda thing

No Problem. I wasn't sure if you were aware of it or not. I can relate to the passing through thing. I am originally from Toronto and ended up in Manitoba. I've been through there several times over the years but the goal was either get there or get back.

I'd like to do that North Shore, just to see if I can improve on the photos I have seen of it. These two are unlike anything that I have came acrossed from these locations.

Heck. I'd like to spend some time in Man and Sask too, but I'd need the whole summer and a motorhome to pull that off.

What part of Ontario are you in. You don't have to be specific if you don't want to.

I'm roughly halfway between Windsor and Fort Erie, and 25 north of Lake Erie.

The big problem with Northern Superior is that it's really in the middle nowwhere. Getting to Thunder Bay would be a good days drive (11 - 12 ) hours. You would need at least 3 - 4 days once you got there. Taking pics in that area is not a 5 min job. Weather and time of day would be a big factor.

You know the area you are in but one trip I would like to would be go up the east side of Lake Huron to Tobermory and the Bruce Peninsula. I think there would be fantastic opportunities there but not much rail I wouldn't think. It might be worth looking into if you haven't been up that way.

I can post the pick of the train I took at Superior if you like. It's not great but it would give you an idea of what it is like depending on where you are of course.

Ha Ha, I missed the engine as well so you're not alone. It was taken from a picnic stop at the north end of Neys Provincial Park. I could see the engine as we pulled in to stop for lunch. The engine was out of sight by the time I got out of the car to take a pic. I did get the full length of the train going around a curve and covering the track.

I've driven through the North Shore of Superior area twice and almost hit a moose outside Thunder Bay in the dark, and know that at times you feel 1000 miles from nowhere along there. I actually have a couple of railroading videos on the area, and a buddies two daughters went to school in T-bay and he said it was a 17 hour drive, which ever way he went to get there.

The only rail along the Huron shore is the GEXR to the salt mines in Goderich anymore. I have snowmobiled up along the Peninsula and got half way to Tobermory, but had to turn around and go back to Owen Sound, as I would have never made it there and back as it was snowing like crazy, and I already had a room in the Sound.

I know the exact spot you means at Neys, as the track curves around the lake near the picnic area.

There used to be two busy rail lines a scant 3 miles north and south of my house, but I was too interested in racing motocross to pay much attention to them or photography, as I thought the end all be all in the world was MX.

Man, that was the dumbest thing I EVER did.

When I was a kid in the 60's my family and I spent 3 weeks going around Lake Superior, camping in our travel trailer at the provincial parks. Thunder Bay wasn't Thunder bay yet, it was still two separate towns whose names I've long since forgotten. It was a great trip and I want to do it again.

We all have some "Shoulda Woulda Couldas" but didn't for one reason or another. You described the spot exactly.

Your buddy is right. It is a long way to get to and you have to go through nowhere to get there no matter which way you travel. It would be most suited for people travelling through anyway and could add an extra travel day. That would give them time to stop for some pictures. Heck, a person could spend a week in that area. It would make an ideal destination point for those that are into railroads and trains for whatever reason. The two pics you posted look like they could be taken from that area. I'm not into trains but when you see something like Neys or the shots you took, how can anyone resist.

I mention Tobermory because that could be an alternate route we could take from Wpg to TO. Tobermory would be alot closer for you if you are looking for something different. I haven't been there yet but have seen pics. There are lots of sunken freighters that a tour boat will show you along with old lighthouses and other scenery. There is lots of info on Google that can give you more info. I think a polarizing filter could come in handy so take one with you if you decide to take the trip.

I wish we had more time for exploring your area when we are in SO but there is only so much time on a vacation. Our time is pretty well taken up visiting friends and family.

Your thinking of Fort William and Port Arthur.
