Hey forum,

I will soon be in the market for a new lens and I plan to make this one an L. I am in dire need of a telephoto to use with my new (used :D) 1D. I have been researching the following lenses but can't make a clear decision.

The three lenses are:

70-200mm f4L Non-IS
200mm f2.8 II
300mm f4L Non-IS

So far, I think the 2.8 is winning the race because I think I really need that faster aperture (high ISO is not one of the 1D's fortes).

What are your opinions? Please provide specific information if you have owned one or more of these personally.

Thanks,

Benjamin

200 is a little short for soccer. I use a 1.4 TC with my 70-200 on a crop body and still come up a little short at times.

200 is a little short for all of the field but 300 can be a little long for the close end. I think the 70 - 200 would be a good choice. I have the same lens and can shoot daytime soccer games with shutter speeds over 1000 even at 100 iso unless its really overcast. Then a slight bump in ISO will keep the speeds up and the IS is not really needed with those speeds.

How about a Sigma 70-200 2.8 HSM, they are more in your budget.

I know dogs like to run all over the place so a prime lens might be a bit frustrating, and the same with soccer I'd go for a zoom. I am not a sports shooter so correct me if I don't know what I'm talking about. the 70-200 f/4L is a great lens (I just sold mine but it was very good) but if you need 2.8 then you need 2.8, don't settle for a slower lens just for the red ring around it...

I was looking at used so they're all in my range. And the 200 2.8 does have a red ring ;)

For lightning fast dogs, definitely a zoom lens. The 70-200 f/4 IS will work out great for this. But you should also consider the 70-200 2.8 non-IS. Great lens optically, and the IS isn't missed for your intended usage. The extra stop might come in handy to stop/freeze the action.

Just a little over your budget can get you a SHARP copy (20/20 LP/M) of this 50-500 which gets you all the reach you need, albeit not as bright as you wanted...

Aren't those out of budget?

both of those blow out the budget unfortunately...

what does your kit consist of right now?

personally i'd rather have a telephoto zoom, but that doesn't mean anything obviously if you're happy with a prime :)
