A Wood duck.

He does not look like he is made outa wood!!! ;-)a :p;-)a

Any idea how they got the name of wood duck??

I just googled that question!

Range/Habitat: The Wood Duck breeds from British Columbia south to California, and from Montana east to Nova Scotia and south to Texas and Florida. ... The wood duck, as its name implies, requires wooded cover for nesting.

Charles, we should ask Fotoi what the habitat is like where he shoots these Wood Ducks.
I've never googled them, just assumed their name because they love wooded areas near water. They prefer hollow trees over water or waters edge to nest in, they will use boxes made for them readily to nest in if the habitat suits them. I have a pond in a heavily wooded (Oak) area on my East farm, they are on it most of the year until ice forces them to leave. It is nearly inaccessible so photographing them close up and low is not possible. Steep terrain and heavy woods with underbrush to waters edge. They spend most of their time along the edge and in fall feed constantly on acorns that fall or drain into the pond. The small acorns from the Red Oak family are their preferred it seems and I have a lot of them.
They are the only duck I've seen in my area that will land in trees and I see them often sitting on limbs as lookouts it appears. My Wood ducks are so wild and skittish I will not attempt to describe them other than, NO GOOD CLOSE PHOTOS for me so far.:-)

Grizz1, I find them in a large pond/small lake near town. They are relatively tame because so many people come out to feed them on a regular basis. They let you get sort of close, but many of my shots are with my 600mm and sometimes with the Canon 1.4x III teleconverter attached (so 840mm).
