Cane toads arrived here 15 years ago and have killed off a lot of species. Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

Hope it gets some moisture. I saw one rather wanting in the heat we had a couple of years back. Your's maybe different, ours more used to a damp weather and when a severe hot dry comes it's foreign to the poor things. Thanks Richard! We have a ground-level "lizard bath" in addition to the bird bath in the garden, and the blue-tongues drink from that when its dry Stephen ----- flickr

We have had cane toads for longer than that, and the blue-tongues (and other wildlife) seem to know to leave them alone. Perhaps they have learnt over many generations? We certainly have cane toads in the garden, but we've had quite a few generations of blue-tongues over the years as well, and if anything they are more numerous now that 20 years ago. Yeah, I think you're right; as a species they do slowly learn to leave them alone (or eat only the non-toxic bits). We are, in the last two or three years, starting to see small goannas again (no big ones yet) and frilly lizards too. Hopefully the blue-tongues will reappear eventually. Strangely the water goannas seem to have been unaffected by the arrival of the cane toads--still plenty of big ones around--and they were one of the species scientists had been most concerned about. Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

Oct 15, 2020 11:07 | #20590 My first ever bear! At Yosemite Park, I think it's a brown bear. There were super calm rangers on scene watching her/making sure no one did anything stupid, so I felt safe even though in this moment she seemed very alert.

Congratulations! This is actually a brown phase of a black bear. We don't have any brown bears (grizzles) at Yosemite Park. I think most folks don't realize that. Beautiful, sharp lion shot, fotoi! Excellent lighting! LD, or Mike
