A couple of Tawny Frogmouths taken in our local Toohey Forest, perched some 10 metres from the ground.

Tawny Frogmouths are nocturnal birds. During the day, they perch on tree branches, often low down, camouflaged as part of the tree.

When a roosting Tawny Frogmouth is discovered, it usually adopts a static posture which makes it resemble a broken-off branch: it perches stiffly, sleeking its plumage and orientating its tail along the branch, and narrowing its eyes to slits. In addition, its plumage, a blend of spots, blotches and streaks of grey, brown, black and tawny, blends in almost perfectly with its surroundings.

I suspect the bird looking into the camera is an inquisitive juvenile.

When I first started reading (before seeing photo) from the name Tawny Frogmouth, I thought it would be some sort of a frog!

Then when I saw the photo I thought it looked like an owl with the wide eyes of the juvenile owl or in the owl family.

Well wasnt exactly upside down but I was looking down at them ..I was lucky as I was on the high side of a river bank slightly higher than eye level. I hardly ever shoot up into trees these days as almost all the shots I did like that always come out terrible due to things like backlighting and perspective/ angle. Infact I have a rule now that unless I can get near eye level I dont shoot it. Thats of course unless its something Im desperate to shoot and then I will take the chance but thats rare these days. Does mean though having to really find situations like very steep terrain where branches are almost eye level like situation for the bats. The tree /branch on thhe river bank where the bats were was apprx 1 -2 meters lower but Im ok with lower perspective more than higher as at least i dont have to worry about backlighting and if its configured right the Bokeh of bush/vegetation instead of horrible white/grey sky can help to isolate the subject . Same for birds . I try to find spots where the trees start way lower than what I am so my eye line is at least straight out in front to of me /level to the perched bird and not up . Means almost Mountain goat situations I need to get to and lots of climbing but well worth it in the long run

Maybe you fully understood my comment, but in case you did not I was asking did you look upside down to the bats....

Maybe I should re-worded that to "Are you looking upside down to them"? instead of at them.....

I wonder do bats/birds have a sensation of things being upside down at all!

I don't know about bats, but most of the pictures of birds in banked flight show their heads aligned with the horizon. I recently saw a picture in this site of an eagle flying inverted and noted it twisted its head nearly 180° to match level flight.

As it was so recent, I was able to find the picture: POST 19153670
