Yes they are strong swimmers, but don't survive on being able to have a body of water.
I'd noticed they seem to sit very low in the water compared to ducks.
I'd followed a few of these around the dam and was conscious of the background. Watching here on the forum how effective water can be to enhance and make for interesting photos it certainly sharpens the pencil when coming to composition. When it works out ie
