If you watch them for a while, they take turns being on guard, for quite short periods as the literally drop off to sleep - they look drowsy, their eyes close and they slump to one side. Usually there are several guards covering the points of the compass, but in the zoo their behaviour changes, because there are walled areas on two sides, so they have learnt not to worry about threats from those directions.
