At least amongst Australasian Tree Frogs, it is only the males that call. In species where there is no obvious sexual dimorphism, therefore, the males have a more pronounced throat pouch.

Of course some species show clear sexual dimorphism where the males and females look quite different. You will see an example of that in the image that I'm about to post :-)

Thanks for that Stephen, I'll have to look more closely at the frogs in and around my house. They're green and Roth's tree frogs. Some call (very loudly) but I've never noticed the throat area looking distended like that.


Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.
