Black bear family in Alberta. When I took this the bears were foraging about 100m from the highway. Someone with just a cell phone decided to throw food to the bear family (a mother and 3 cubs) and of course the bears came closer. I strongly protested as this bear baiting would likely not end well for the bears and perhaps not humans as the bears would associate us with food. The bears came within about 10m of the road, and I had retired to my car when a ranger turned up and quickly assessed the situation. She pulled out a shotgun and shot the mother bear with a kind of round that had soft plastic in it, so that between the noise and the stinging sensation it took off with the cubs. The ranger then gave the person who was feeding the bear an on-the-spot fine. Some people shouldn't be let out without a keeper.

Here is the cub checking those humans out before things got silly...

How cruel is that.

I hope the fine was severe.

The shot would have more startled it and certainly not injured it. The perpetrator got a $4,000 fine.
