The big ones--fruit bats or flying foxes--live on fruit and nectar, and roost in the trees of shady forest (and sometimes shady gardens).

There's so little protein in fruit. Does a cat-size bat have to eat all day––or, rather, all night––to maintain itself?

Yes that's true. Little Reds are one of the smaller species of fruit bat and actually don't eat much fruit. Their preferred food is Eucalyptus pollen and nectar but still, very little protein. Many animals can make protein from non-protein sources though. Cattle, for example, eat only grass but turn it into a protein source for humans.:) But of course they eat all day too.

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

Thank you Charles.
That Bear was a mellow fellow.
It liked to sit under the fruit tree and munch on pears.:-)
