Nice picture and a BEAUTIFUL horse for being a wild one. They are usually much scragglier than that.

This fellow and many others have been transplanted to ranch lands in tall grass country, southern Kansas in this case. There are thousands of these wild mustangs on ranches in my area along the Kansas and Oklahoma border. The government pays the ranchers to house and feed them at a huge cost to the taxpayers in order to appease the animal rights extremists that declared their pea-brain jihad on the animals being destroyed due to over population and environmental damage in the western states. The prairie grasses of the Flint Hills are a great improvement over the sparse opportunities on their former range, so these horses are doing very well here on the prairie. But there is a side effect, these lands were formerly the home of thousands of head of cattle that helped feed America, and now are sent to feedlots earlier, resulting in higher costs and thus meat prices. Higher taxes, higher food costs, and undoubtedly a few Congressment patting themselves on the back because they solved the wild horse problem.

So how wild are they if they're being housed and fed?

And they're not even native to this continent; they were brought over by the Spanish in the 1500s. If people didn't like looking at them so much, they'd probably be declared an invasive species....
