I had posted this picture, some time ago, in another thread, which disappeared after Photobucket's meltdown. I thought it fits this thread.

Hi Stu,

Well, I have the EXIF below for one, this was taken a few years back actually, so I will try and explain. :)

I was in my truck driving slow along this road at a wildlife management area, I see this mother elk and her young about 2 car lengths from the road, but I was still about 8 car lengths from them.
I was coming upon a right hand turn, a bend in the road I stopped slowly and as they were going into the wooded area they both stopped and luckily I had light enough to shoot. There were several large oak trees in the background and I wanted to separate the elk from the trees so I used a larger ƒ/stop than I normally would, I usually use ƒ/8, but I opened it up to ƒ/6.3. The EXIF on POTN doesn't show that I used a Canon 1.4 extender vIII, but I did, I just didn't put that information in there, (yet) the 1.4 extender on the 400mm ƒ/2.8 lens always makes for a nice bokeh.
This set-up weighs 17lbs altogether, I hand-hold too, so it is HEAVY!
(I mostly use my 7DmkII though now along with my Canon 100-400mm vII lens, it does 'almost as well' on most things, and better in others, I still have and use my 1DmkIV and my ƒ2.8 lens)

As far as what I did in Photoshop, I always use Topaz Noise and Topaz Detail on my images to make them look their best. I do that using Masks in Photoshop to selectively choose where I want each effect. I don't get halos doing this./

EF400mm f/2.8L IS USM +1.4x
ƒ/6.3
560.0 mm

(off, did not fire)

That's about it, I guess, I hope that this helps, and THANK YOU very much for the nice words, I always appreciate that. :)

I saw a fox once, ONCE, and it was around 1995, since then, none. :)
I love that expression he/she has, that is a very cool shot. Someday I hope to see one again, they are around but I just have not been lucky enough, I guess. I have seen your other shots but this one is a favorite.

Your wish is my command Stu.... I do odd ball crops because I've had a ton of stuff stolen as of late. I've had many people contact me saying they found my image that someone else was posted as their own.

But here is that image in its original crop. Thanks Stu

Are they urban foxes? We do have foxes where I live, but I've yet to see one close enough for a decent photo, unfortunately. I did once scare the s**t out of one when it came out of the bushes and saw me standing about 5ft away. I'll never forget the terror in its eyes... :-(

Funny I was going to ask the same on the squirrels ... The answer is no.. they are large bush foxes miles from any town or homes. they do have a wide eyed look when at attention.

Are they afraid of humans, or just wary? And, being out in the wilds, are they as persecuted as our urban and not-so-urban foxes are? Our urban squirrels (greys for the most part in the UK, except for some lucky areas that have the red) can be cheeky little monsters, raiding bird feeders and begging for food if they hear the rustle of a crisp bag!

No our foxes are not run down by human's and dogs. They do get their fair share of humans in car's. but some can be very savvy about staying alive. Most are afraid of humans. I think there will always be all the above but for the most part foxes here as all animals really are very allusive. I live in the area that transitions between hard wood bush and boreal forest to strictly coniferous forest. So within a couple hours I can be in any and all.

Here at home I have all the critters you have seen me post.. From Moose and black bear to pine marten, beaver, muskrat, deer, Lynx, loon, owls, its a land of Lakes, ponds, rivers, hard wood bush and spruce bog.

Perfect for the wildlife photog..
