The only really dangerous spiders in Australia are Sydney funnelwebs and, to a much less extent as they are not aggressive, redbacks (which are related to black widows). There have been no deaths since antivenom was developed in 1981 for funnelwebs and 1958 for redbacks. There are a few others that can give a painful bite if really threatened. The reputation of white-tailed spiders for releasing necrotising venom is an urban myth; same for recluse/fiddleback spiders (in Australia) releasing haemotoxic venom. Reference this Australian Geographic (external link) article. Bees kill far more people than spiders, and of course mosquitoes, the most dangerous animal in world, kill hundreds of thousands of people each year by spreading diseases like zika and malaria, neither of which we have in Australia (we do have other mosquito borne diseases but deaths from them are very rare). So come visit us! I can almost guarantee you'll make it home. :)

I have been to Aus on several occasions during my seafaring days, fabulous country.

You've forgotten the ubiquitous Redback (it's a true-blue spider - The redback spider is a species of highly venomous spider)

Following by Slim Newton

There was a redback on the toilet seat,
When I was there last night.
I didn't see him in the dark,
But boy I felt his bite.
I jumped up high into the air,
And when I hit the ground.
That crafty redback spider,
Wasn't nowhere to be found.

I rushed into the mrs,
Told her just where I'd been bit.
And she grabbed my cutthroat razor,
And I nearly took a fit.
I said 'Forget what's on your mind,
And call a doctor please.
For I've got a feeling that your cure,
Is worse than the disease.'

There was a redback on the toilet seat,
When I was there last night.
I didn't see him in the dark,
But boy I felt his bite.
And now I'm here in hospital,
A sad and sorry plight.
And I curse the redback spider,
On the toilet seat last night.

I can't lie down, I cant' sit up I don't know what to do.
The nurses think it's funny but that's not my point of view.
I tell you it's embarrasing and that's to say the least,
For I'm too sick to eat a bite,
While the spider had a feast.

And when I get back home again, I'll tell you what I'll do.
I'll make that Redback suffer for the pain I'm going through.
I've had so many needles, I'm looking like a siv.
I promise you that redback hasn't very long to live.

There was a redback on the toilet seat,
When I was there last night.
I didn't see him in the dark,
But boy I felt his bite.
And now I'm here in hospital,
A sad and sorry plight.
And I curse the redback spider,
On the toilet seat last night.

Now I just need a photo of him looking at me and that will fit the forum topic.

Ah the stuff of legend. Highly venomous but not at all aggressive. I've lived in houses in central Australia where there's been dozens of them behind doors, in cupboards etc. Leave them alone and they'll leave you alone. Last person to die from a redback bite was an 18 month old infant in 1958. That poem does bring back memories of the old Aussie dunny/outhouse, a sadly fading feature of Aussie architecture. Unfortunately I don't have any photos of them either, we never see them in the Top End.

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.
