Hi,

my first post here and hope there will be a lot more. Like this place really much. Thank you for the informations providing here!

Im opening this thread, because I would like to have comparison of these two stands and maybe others will be interested also.

So I would like to use one from these mainly on location so with 4050 no counterweight or even sandbag need, but the 4030 is more portable - much more portable, because of weight and closed length also 1,12m vs 1,6 m and 15kg vs 8,4kg. And the 4039 is combi boom stand so its much more versatile - speed, using...

But the curiosity is that I dont know why I feel that I have to buy the 4050, because it have to be much more robust and maybe because of the thread I posted here. But why would someone want the 4050, if the 4039 has almost the same loading capacity. I mean if its used as boom there is only 2kg difference.

So I know that everyone will probably tell that buy the 4039 and I also see it as the way to go, but also have the feeling that I have to buy the more robust, in other words the 4050.

Can you please explain which stand is good for what? Because I cannot se any big difference, only the wight and the load capacity if not used with boom. Therefore I think the only thing which matters is the load capacity when not used for booming.

edit: price does not make huge difference between the two

Location I would take A4039. A4050 for studio work.

Understand, my english is not the best. So for those who need to work with really heavy modifier and boom far off, they have to choose the avegner 50.

I own both stands, and I can't imagine using the 4050 on location. It is truly a giant stand, and is very heavy. I'm a big guy, so *could* carry it on location, but I see no reason/need (even with the Elinchrom Indirect Octa). The 4039 is my favorite location stand, and the 4050 is really meant for the studio.

Thank you. Yes, there is big difference in weight and 50 is really dedicated for studio, but where do you see the difference in using? What is the point where you say, yes, this time I need the 50 instead of the 39? This is what I would like to know.

I m standing for the same decision, because I need a boom aswell. Even tho I do a lot of studio work, it would be nice to have the option for on location aswell. Is the 4039 stable enough when extended?

I have the 4050 but not the 39. If you can see it in person, you will understand that the 50 can handle lot more weight. When boom is fully extended, I often use 20 lbs counter weight, though it can manage quit a bit without the counter weight when not extended. I chose the 4050 because there is limited space on one side of my home studio, and I have to boom the hair light 6 feet across. Once the boom set, the setup is rock solid. Also I shoot kids photo a lot, and I don't have to worry they knock the boom over.

Now there are couple things you might not want the 50. Beside the size and overall weight, the 50 is quite top heavy. Imagine that with the light, modifier, and counter weight, I could have 30-40 lbs in my hands. I have to raise them 7-8 ft high, then let go my right hand while my left supporting all the weight, fully extended, and use my right hand to tighten the knobs. A friend of mine did that once, and he refused to do it the second time. It requires some strength and is scary at times.

Even in studio, it really need the optional wheels if you want to move 4050 often. Picking up and re-positioning a 60-70 lbs rig is no fun and not safe. The wheels will set it back $120.

What helped me to decide on the 4050 was when someone descried something like this: for the lighter duty boom, there is the question of "what if it could handle couple more pounds.." for the A4050CS, there is no doubt.

I too have been using the 4050. I'm sure i could 'get by' with the 4039, but when i hang an Elinchrom RX600 on my Mola Euro, with grid attached, i'd be suspect on whether the 4039 could handle it with ease. I only use booms indoors. So outdoors doesn't matter to me. However, i'd never want to bring the 4050 outdoors, it's just too big and heavy.

I have the 4039 and love it. You have to use a counterweight with heavier setups though, but that isn't too big of a deal. It comes with an empty counterweight bag, so I just filled mine up with river rocks from the local hardware store. That's enough weight for my Einstein and 86" PLM.

I used that combo recently at a wedding for the formal shots. The strobe was boomed about 12' in the air, and it felt rock solid. I brought sandbags for the stand, but didn't get them out of my car.

I don't think there are any specific rules for me as to when I'd lug the 50 outdoors, but I've used my setti, El Octa indirect, and everything other modifier I've owned on the 39...so it's doable.

If I were in the studio, I'd like use the 50 for most boom work purely because it's beefier, taller, and will hold the weight more easily...but that's certainly not to say the 39 isn't strong.


Let's get more specific. What are you *you* trying to hang off of the boom? Then we can tell you whether it would be appropriate for the 39, or would necessitate the 50. I think the Mola Mantti would potentially require the 50, but that's about it.

Bad joke, sorry, but couldnt resist. So the Avenger 4039 seem to be the choice, because it can really hold "everything". The 4050 is out - as it use to be - was wondering that c-stand with D600 is also good option. I think I will buy one of these. The problem is that Im from slovakia(europe) and the prices are "little bit different".

And not only the prices, but the availability is very bad for photography products. And if I order something from USA the duties and taxes makes it almost the same as ordering from europe, because its usually +25% from the (product+shipping) price.

Have a look at the Manfrotto 420CSU, also available at PDM for 177.50 euros.
Same specs as the Avenger as far as I can see.
This is what I use btw. :)
