Nov 09, 2005 18:58 | #3 I really want to get a 2.8 70-200 since hockey and gymnastics are coming up and you cant really use flash, and the sigma 2.8 is more afordable then the canon 2.8L. How about the image quality?? Would i be disapointed going from the canon to the sigma? Jameson

With the money you save, pick up the Canon 85 f1.8 also.

For me the price makes it very attractive. One of my concerns is about the quality, is it going to be an okay lense, or will it be a good lense? Canon 7D, 50D & 20D, Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6, Canon 17-40 f4, Canon 24-70 f2.8, Canon 70-200 IS f2.8

In all seriousness, the 2.8 Sigma is a fine lens. If you get the F4..you'll be fighting for faster shutter constantly.

PhotoPainter Member 34 posts Joined Jan 2005 More info | I have both! As others mention above, they perform very similarly in terms of sharpness, color rendition, and auto focus speed. If you don't shoot at f2.8 that much, the Canon f4 is the way to go since its smaller, lighter, and less expensive(even more so if you take advantage of Canon's current triple rebate) than the Sigma. The Canon version also focus closer(minimum focus distance is less than 4' vs Sigma's 6'). On the other hand, if f2.8 is important to you, the Sigma is an excellent lens as well(specially you use it with TC since its one stop faster). I bet you will be happy on either one of them. Good luck on your new purchase. 1DIII | 1DII N | 5DII | 5D | 10-22f/3.5-4.5 | 16-35f/2.8L | 24-70f/2.8L | 24-105f/4.0L | 70-200f/4.0L | 20f/2.8 | 35f/2.0 | 50f/1.4 | 85f/1.8 | 135f/2L | Canon 1.4x II | 420EX

Having said that, the Sigma has some great reviews. Remember, if you buy the f/2.8 (Canon or Sigma) you're going to carry around a lot of additional weight. My Canon f/4 takes great pictures (actually, I take great pictures
