So I bought an 85mm 1.8 on 11/22. I went through Amazon because... not sure why, I've not had issues with them in the past. Paid $399. Yesterday, 11/27, Canon announces an instant rebate of $40. BHPhoto has the offer, as do 99.99% other retailers. Amazon shows it at $379 from a third-party seller while I bought from Amazon LLC. BH has it for $358.

I called and they said that they 1) won't honor it because I purchased from Amazon directly and the cheaper price ($379) is from a third-party. 2) They won't honor the manufacturers instant rebate because there is no price to compare to... since I bought from Amazon LLC directly and they don't match anything but to their own site... lol.

Whatever - I would return it if it weren't a gift. I'd return it and pick it up from BH for a whopping $42 cheaper. Blah.

Just a heads up. They talk about a 30-day price guarantee or whatever... except its full of "gotcha's" because if its fulfilled by Amazon directly they will only refund you if the price is adjusted on Amazon.com with THEM as the seller. Well isn't that convenient.

you have 30 days. Why not wait until Amazon is again selling the lens? Apparently right now they are not selling the lens, someone else is. As I understand it, they offer a price guarantee against them lowering the price on something you recently bought, it is not however a price matching guarantee. I can't imagine that they would choose not to restock the lens for 30 days just to keep from offering a manufacturers discount.

Yeah let's hope. Though, I have noticed in the past that they one month do have a lens for sale then the next they don't, etc. Not sure what drives that.

Amazon does offer a price guarantee on things you buy only if Amazon themselves lower the price after you purchase the item. However apparently Amazon is not even offering the lens right now, and as you found, they do not count third-party sellers in this price guarantee. Remember that Amazon has nothing to do with third-party prices, and I would not expect them to honor those prices. When Amazon is out of stock on the 85mm f/1.8, only third-party sellers are shown. I was looking at the 85mm f/1.2 myself the other day, sold by Amazon, but now only third-party sellers are shown. Keep watching for Amazon to offer the lens again, perhaps you can still get the difference refunded.

As a side note, I wish Amazon would present products from third-party sellers a little differently. Multiple listings of the same product and multiple prices being presented on a products page sometimes leads to confusion and complications.
