Glad to hear that, I just bought one! And no, that doesn't mean I'll have four 50mm lenses :p Sold the 50L to fund a 35L, and hoping to sell the 1.4 and 1.8 to recoup $$ for the Sigma.

loving it as much as I?

Don't know yet - I just sent payment earlier today, so I should have it in a few days. If I still have the Canon 1.4, maybe I'll do another comparison :)

I have a 50L and Sigma 50 on the way I only hope that they are both good copies so I can have a fair test session/shoot out because one stays and one goes.

Just to make matters worse I just spent the last 30min looking at the Zeiss 50mm f/2.0 Makro-Planar ZE Macro Lens thread. It looks nice too:cool:

If they are both good copies I will.

I should have done that. I have NO patience albeit I order online all the time.

berger bros and cameta camera or like 5 minutes from my house
adorama...b&h in the city where I'm often

but the tax thing...I could have purchased from say Unique Photo in Jersey and I would have saved 40. I could have order online from where I got it and shipped to to daughter in pa and again saved the 40, had I waited til the following day a $20 off coupon from them came in the mail

well enjoy your lens sir

I'd like to see your comparison! The only thing I would like better about the Canon is that it is smaller and lighter. The Sigma uses 77mm filter size so that tells you right there that there is more glass to it. Mine focuses fast and accurate, I can shoot in the basement at like 1/30 ISO3200 on my 5D and it never hunts for focus. I owned 2 copes of the 50 1.8 on separate occasions (for a short amounts of time) and my purpose was to use them in low light which the AF just couldn't deliver. The Sigma is a real keeper, over all my other lenses!

I find the 1.8 unacceptably "jittery" in the outside shots. The 1.4 is acceptable, and 1.2 is good. The price difference is a personal choice. I took the 1.4 in price this time 'round.

Quite a difference. Check out the brush by the staff of the stick that is being photographed. The 1.2L out performs them like crazy. The 1.8 is very bothersome, 1.4 not as much, 1.2L is so creamy and clean!

2, 4, 8.. I feel like this is how it SHOULD be at least without cheating. There is a pretty significant difference in sharpness of the letters on the lens... I would hope the most sharp (the first) is the most expensive one. The 3rd photo is pretty soft...like the nifty fifty I had :P

Thanks for posting all these... Without digging through specs, how are the MFD's between all these?

I think they all capable of shooting very close. I have all three with me as well, only use the 1.2, and it's not because of IQ, but reliability.

the photo by stevenandrew is very surprising though, bokeh can be very different, yet I havent bothered to compare. The only reason I shoot the 1.2 is because it's very accurate at nailing AF compared to the other two. I'de love for a 1.8 USM, sharp and inexpensive to exist, but it doesnt.

I have all three Canon 50's in my possession for just a few hours, so riddle me this - which image came from which lens? All were shot at f/1.8. (I forgot to remove exif data - no cheating!)

I know this is an old post but it's kinda interesting. I compared the writing on the lens "Image Stabilizer Ultrasonic". #3 is easier to spot (least sharp) and that'd be nifty fifty.

I got lucky on #1 and #2. Guessed all of them correctly.
