I ordered this lens off of eBay and this mark didn't appear in the photos I was given during the bidding process. I don't have any cleaning materials and I cannot determine whether this is just oil / dirt / mark or whether it is a scratch. Any ideas?

Looks like a mark in the coating. Hard to tell if it goes into the glass. Does it adversely affect pictures? One of the bad things about buying lenses online is that some marks like that are only visible from certain angles (which clever/dubious sellers use to their advantage).

I don't think it affects the pictures too much (heck I don't and probably will never know), but leaves a bad taste in my mouth. This is the first time purchasing a used lens. I don't have the right tools / materials to clean lenses at the moment so I'm probably going to take it to my local camera shop and ask what their opinion on it is. I hope it is just a mark that can wash off. I'd like to have some faith in the seller and hoping this slipped with no ill intentions.

Best case scenario is that it's something that will wipe away. Good luck!

Use a charcoal pen like a "lenspen" and see if it cleans it.

Agreed. Get a lenspen and try to clean it. If you have lenses, you need one anyways and you aren't going to make whatever it is worse with a lenspen.

I'll pick one up at the store tomorrow! Any particular brands that work better than others? Or are they all pretty much equal in quality?

There's actually a brand known as LensPen that is excellent. I've used them before and they work wonderfully. Just be sure to blow or brush away any large particles that could further scratch your lens before using the cleaning tip.

and be sure to point the scratched glass side downwards while cleaning, you wouldn't want stray particles to scratch around the glass. ;)

It looks like something oily. I would take it to your local camera shop and see what they can do... Let us know how it works out!

I don't have any cleaning materials...

Get a microfibre cloth, give it a huff with your breath and it will probably wipe off.
If you haven't got a microfibre cloth, just us a clean cotton tshirt.
You might have to give it a couple of tries.

After a bit of wiping, it ended up coming off. Thanks for all the input guys! I did end up buying some things to start my lens cleaning arsenal.

FYI, just make sure to buy a real "LensPen" such as this one:

Marketplace sellers on Amazon and eBay may sell you a cheap knockoff - and you don't want to trust cleaning your expensive glass with a cheap knockoff.
