I'm plus-one-ing the book Understanding Exposure.

There's no need to "waste" money on it -- I read it out of my local library. At any rate, I would honestly put that book at the top of your pile and leave a bookmark in the other one. Read the book with your camera manual at your side. It will be wrinkled and dog-eared before you're done. Throw all the Internet learning on after and during reading that, and you're golden.

A year after the library reading, I went out and bought the book, re-read it one time, and now I just loan it to all my friends who buy nice cameras and are just getting started.

I believe he's already bought the book(s). But when he's done reading them he can hand them on down to anyone else he knows is interested in photography. I'm sure there will be one or two crossing his path soon.

Shampoo sounds like an unfortunate name for a hair product.
You're a ghost driving a meat-coated skeleton made from stardust, riding a rock, hurtling through space. Fear Nothing!

Why go out and make a purchase that really isn't necessary? The internet is a #1 information resource. Plus,it's free. Save your money for other photography goodies. :)

probably the very reason books and the internet live side by side.
some things I like to read on and about on the internet
books I like to read on my iPad/kindle type
photography books I much prefer to have in print
