I have made a move from 7D for 5DmkII and never looked back. My images are so much more vibrant and warm and more pleasing to the eye. I loved my 7D, but I welcomed the move to FF. Well, this is not what I want to ask.
I will need a camera to take with me to a harsh desert environment, like Burning Man for example. I was considering getting a decent copy of 5D Classic, 50mm 1.4 (which I already have), selling 7D and I'd be set. There is something about FF, that makes me all tingly inside.

The difference between my 7D and a used 5D is a couple of hundred bucks, but 7D is still a camera newer even than my 5DmkII.

7D could be weather sealed if coupled with one of the "L" lenses. I believe 5D is the same way. I could put either 17-55 (which isn't optimal for it's dust-sucking propensity) or Sig 30 1.4 on 7D and have roughly the same setup.

There is another option - I could pick an older 40D/50D for a half-price of 7D and keep it as my "harsh environment" camera. I'd probably tape all the seams anyway.

Would you keep 7D or swap for 5Dc or get an older xxD?

Check out Carl Lyttle's Burning Man photographs, he took these about 10 years ago I think, he is a really nice bloke as well;

Sorry that wasn't really answering your question, but I thought you might be interested.

Burning man can be dusty, I'd keep the 7d.

Carl shoots with Canon I think, but these were almost certainly shot on film. He had an exhibition of the images at The Association of Photographers Gallery in London and I produced postcards and invites for the event. I think he gave me digital files, but I am pretty sure he had them scanned in, in those days we were scanning around 95% of the work that came in.

There will be quite a bit of dust, but more importantly a lot of the best shots of Burning Man that Carl took were done in dark conditions, and from what I have heard the 5Dc focus may not be up to that. The 7D would be your best camera for the job I reckon.

Just don't take my word for it!

It sounds like for what you want the 7D would be best for the job (unless you want to spring for a 1D4).

Some Canon stuff and a little bit of Yongnuo.

Unfortunately, I can't afford 1d4. :(
Another option is to consider maybe 1DII, since it's better protected from elements and on average it costs about the same as 5Dc.

I have both the 7D and the 5D classic. I'd choose the 7D for burning man for it's faster handling and focus system. I don't work in dusty conditions so I can't really comment on that issue.

I wouldn't get the II over a 7D. A 1d3 maybe, but not a 1D2.

The 7D is better sealed then the 5D2, I would assume the 5D2 might be better sealed then the 5DC. ( but I cannot say with certainty.

I own both the 7D and 5D2, for where you are going I would take the 7D.

The " full frame " may give you a " tingly feeling " but what kind of feeling will you get with dust induced damage to a camera lens or body?

.

One other thing ......

No matter which one you choose, I would get a rain sleeve for added protection from dust.

I use one on my 7D when at the beach because the 100-400mm IS L i use is not sealed.

I've taken XSi couple of years ago to BM and it survived just fine, took it for cleaning. 35 bucks later it was as good as new. :)
I know I got lucky and next time something like this might not happen, but I'm going to take extra precautions anyway whether the camera is weather sealed or not.
1D3 is still an almost $2K camera. I guess it also a matter of depreciation of 7D. Looks like it's holding its value pretty good so far.
I might just keep my 7D since I've had it brand new and know the camera already.

I don't know that I would say the 7d is holding it's value well. It is selling new for $1700 and consistently selling used for about $1100. That's about a 35% decrease in original value. Probably doesn't help that Canon sells these refurbed at $1200ish.
