So after almost 2 years I'm toying with the idea of trading up from my trusty 50D, I have 2 options here:

1) I know someone who will sell me his 1DmkIII soon for $1500.

2) go for a 5DmkII through Canon's Loyalty Program.

I go back and forth between sports action (Baseball, Motocross, Jetski racing, Surfing and Skateboarding) to doing alot of portraiture.

One of the main reasons to upgrade is to be able to shoot clean at higher ISO as a flash won't work in alot of my situations.

You can see what glass I have in my signature.

Opinions / advice here ?

Thanks !

My question would be are you paid for your sports photos? If yes, Mk3. If no, then I'd have to think about whether the upgrade is necessary. Might COnsider Keeping the 50d for sports and adding a 5Dc for the higher ISOs. I, personally, wouldn't be happy shooting sports on a FF, but that's me - and it would be for the crop factor.

Initially no I'm not being paid, but that is subject to change in the near future.

For $1500 for the Mk3 it's really not an issue to me, I could even sell the 50D to supplement the cost if need be.

That case, buy the Mk3 and keep the 50D. Use the Mk3 with your 100-400 and the 50 with your 24-70 for up close action.

I have a 50D and a 5D II. The 5D II has a noticeably slower frame rate, but focus speed and accuracy is about the same. Image quality seems very similar to me through ISO 1600. The 5D II is somewhat better at ISO 3200 and ISO 6400. You will also capture more fine detail in your shots.

I've been doing a lot of shopping on the Classifieds: Sell board here and on the Fred Miranda Buy & Sell (external link) forum lately. Used 5D II's are popping up for $1900 almost daily. You could probably even find one for a little less if you are patient.

So you'd recommend the 5D II over the 1D MkIII ?

There is visible noise at ISO 400 on the 50D. The 5DII blows the 50D away for noise control at all ISO speeds.

I don't know what I was thinking. This 50D shot is so noisy compared to this 5D shot that I can hardly stand to look at it.

...and the 50D really sucks at ISO 1600

Just stating my observations about the 50D and 5D - I like them both and think they make a good pair. Never used a 1D III.

Yes, but the ones on my monitor are 24" and the ones on my wall are 16x24. Same results. I can start seeing differences worth taling about at ISO 1600.

Thanks for all the advice but I guess my main issue is I don't really understand the differences between a FF (5dmkII) and my camera, and also what other benefits the 1D would give me...

The 1D will track any AF point and rarely miss--provided it is a post recall version.

Your current body will track center point only nearly as well as the 1D3.

The FF version will track like a 20D or low level rebel.

I beg to differ, the center point on the 5D2 is quite accurate and when used properly is FPS limited.
