I haven't been doing much with insects/arachnids lately, so I thought I would post a couple recent non-insect shots. If you want to see them bigger, I have 1000 pixel versions on Flickr if you click the picture.

This is a daisy from the backyard. I'm not sure what the exact magnification is, but it's greater than 1:1 and less than 2.5x.

I was inspired last night by some new CDs I purchased (am I the last person on this planet who actually likes to own a physical CD?), so I did this ode to DJ's.

Here's a 1:1 shot of that headphone jack:

We recently put up a new squirrel-proof bird feeder. The squirrels were apparently very frustrated, because they (we assume it was them, at least) destroyed our decorative succulents that first evening after trying for several hours to figure out how to beat the new feeder. When I went to buy birdseed a few days ago, I picked up a new potted plant for the table by the feeder, but this time, the plant can fight back against disgruntled squirrels! This cactus is smaller than your fist.

Haha, and I know I said no bugs, but if you made it this far, here is your reward :)

A great collection. I especially like the quality of the jack shots, good light and brokeh, and the crab spider and weevil are also great.

Thanks Bas and annubis. By the way, in case it's not obvious, the bokeh in the first jack shot is the headphones that come with the jack.

Very nice diversion ... 3 and 4 are my favorites ... 4 most especially ... although seeing a gravid White-Banded Crab Spider always makes my day :D

Cheers,

Jack

That first flower makes me think of a jack in the box. The crab spider is my favorite though.

Thanks, guys. And John (or should I say Jack? :) ), thanks for the ID! I was thrilled when I found that spider, but I had no idea what it was. I imagine they aren't that common in Los Angeles, because I haven't seen one before or since. It is by far the most colorful spider I have seen in the area. Everything else is tiny and brown--a far cry from the swamps of Florida.

Thanks, Brian. That weevil was an interesting one, because I thought it was dead while I was shooting it, but while I was reviewing the shots in the viewfinder, it walked away like everything was fine. I wish all insects would remain that frozen during the shots!
